Rez's Ten-2-20-14 This Weeks 10
A weekly list of tunes, New and Old.
Written By: Corey Rezner
1.   Snarky Puppy - " Something ( with Lalah Hathaway ) " - Family Dinner Vol 1
This song won a Grammy a few weeks ago. Snarky Puppy collabs with an amazing singer, Lalah Hathaway, and she lays it down with crazy good vocal improv. Listen near the end for some very unique sounds.
2. Monophonics - " Simon's Song " - Into The Infrasounds
These guys are hittin' strong lately with greats old school funk, brought by this modern rock band. They know how to feel the funk!
3. Widespread Panic - " Blue Indian " - Til the Medicine Takes
A classic WSP tune. It's one of my favorites by the legendary jam band. It's all around a great song with a story, but allows for each listener to create their own personal meaning.
4. Bob Dylan - " Tangled Up In Blue " - Blood On The Tracks
If Bob Dylan didn't make it to a list by the third week I wouldn't be holding true to my roots. I admire his songwriting and his intellectual take on the world around him.  Rolling Stone ranked this song #68 on their list of 500 greatest songs of all time.
5. Valerie June - " You Can't Be Told " - Pushin' Against A Stone
This song receives substantial play in the UK and Valerie June is beginning to make a big footprint in the US this year.
6. Shovels & Rope - " O' Be Joyful " - O' Be Joyful
Awesome lyrics and feel to this tune written and performed by the southern duo Shovels & Rope.
7. Gov't Mule  - " Whisper In Your Soul " - Shout
Just one of the amazing songs off Gov't Mule's new album Shout. They really out-did themselves with this record. Incredible Solos.
8.  Moon Taxi - " The New Back ~ Live & Unplugged " - Acoustic on West 56th
This recent unplugged recording of the single off Moon Taxi's most recent studio album is great. These guys have come a long way.
9.  Grateful Dead - " Fire On The Mountain " - Rocking The Cradle, Egypt 1978
One of my favorite shows to listen to on a long car ride. Long Live The Grateful Dead, who
In 2015 will be celebrating their 50th anniversary according to Bobby Weir!
10. The New Mastersounds - " Hole In The Bag " - Plug and Play
An old school New Mastersounds tune that I just can't get enough of. The good news is the boys from across the pond have a new album coming out this spring. Woohoo!  holla.
Peace and Funk!

1. Leftover Salmon w/ Taj Mahal -
" Lovin' In My Baby's Eyes " - The Nashville Sessions
These musicians team up together for an amazing track, a bluegrass version of Taj Mahals classic hit. Its a great collaboration.
2. Jimmy Cliff - " The Harder They Come " - The Harder They Come
This track is a Reggae Classic at its finest. Covered by Jerry Garcia and many other great musicians, this song was written for purpose of hope and strength in a time were there was much oppression.
3. Astral Project - "Voodoobop" - Voodoobop
New Orleans greatest modern jazz heroes named their only Album from Astral Project after this tune.
4. Railroad Earth - " Like a Buddha " - Bird In A House
Such a fast and happy song for a sunny day in the woods, on a hike, or just sitting around smiling.
5. Lettuce w/ Fred Wesley - "Superfred" - Outta Here
From the guitar to the drums to the funkiest Trombone player alive, this jam will get you dancin' all through the night!
6. Futurebirds - " Wild Heart " - Seney-Stovall
These guys are great live and this one of those anthems that these guys belt out. It hits hard. Though the lyrics may be as simple as it gets, It has truth and passion that not every song out there today has.
7. Snarky Puppy - " Flood " - Tell Your Friends
By far one of the most influential jazz bands on today's new scene. These guys are crushing and in my opinon this is the tune that started it all. With this song don't think its all over during the break near the end. Remember, rests are notes too.
8. James Vincent McMorrow - " If I Had A Boat " - Early In The Morning
There's something about this song that gave me chills. The entire album is incredible.
9. Elvis Perkins In Dearland - " Shampoo " - Elvis Perkins In Dearland
This artist is captivating, has his own sound, and his lyrics are one of a kind. I've been listening to this song for many years and it never gets old.
10. James Brown - " Lets Go Get Stoned " - James Brown The Singles Vol 4: 1966-1967
That does it, the title of this track says it all.
Peace and Funk!
